Thirty-eight years ago as we began our married life, we cycled out of Strafford, Vermont and began a year-long bicycling adventure traveling around the world. (The photo is from Nepal.) Then came another wonderful adventure -- children and careers. With children on their own and our careers behind us, we entered the next chapter, again with a bicycle adventure. That one was more modest, train trips across the country and five weeks on bikes from Los Angeles, CA to Portland, OR; but it greeted us with we good riding, great sights, and interesting people.

After two bicycle trips on the west coast, we tried something different. With an old dog along for the ride and a camper in the bed of the pickup, we set off for the desert southwest exploring national parks, enjoying daily cycling, and even playing a little golf.

In Spring, 2017, we decided on an international adventure. We landed in Lisbon, Portugal and rode a loop through Portugal and Spain and back to Lisbon. Once again, seeing the sights, meeting people, and pedaling 1600 miles were wonderful!

In March 2018 we left Maine after a big snow storm and headed to North Carolina for some warmth - we didn't find it. We went further south to SC - still didn't find it! But we did discover new places to cycle and explore!

It is now August 2023, kids are married with families of their own (five wonderful grandchildren) and we are off on another adventure! Our first stop will be Lily Bay State Park on August 13, then head north and west, across Canada and into Alaska driving and camping with bikes and a canoe. Here is the family, though missing Miles' wife, Baily.

Red Rocks

I’m done with inadequate descriptions and run-on superlatives . . . if you’ve been in the four corners area then you know how spectacular it is; if you haven’t been here then you should try to make the trip when you can.  It really is pretty special.

Just the facts: After a brief side trip to Paris (Las Vegas), we passed through Valley of Fire State Park.  A few folks had mentioned the place to us and it was a pleasant surprise.

On to Ivins, Utah to visit summer friends Linda and Tom Kimbrell -- great hosts in a lovely home.  Spent an afternoon golfing (Linda shot a personal best 84! Never mind what the rest of us shot).  Spent an evening watching the Robert Redford movie, “Jeremiah Johnson”, which was filmed in their neighborhood before it was a neighborhood.

We made an early morning departure from Ivins and drove straight to Zion National Park arriving at 9 am expecting to easily procure a campsite at the first-come, first-serve campground.  Instead, we were fortunate to get the last remaining site!  So far we’ve been very lucky getting sites in crowded places.  Zion is largely closed to automobiles -- all travel is via park-operated shuttle buses.  However, bicycles are allowed and there is a fabulous road through the park, which we had nearly to ourselves.  Made the ride on each of the days we were there -- breaking the riding up with great hikes.

You have probably noticed that we have included some pictures of the camper.  Not sure why except that we have become quite attached to our little (7’ x 13’) home on wheels.  It may be small, but it feels luxurious to us.  We have slept in some nice spots.  More than once as we have sat by the evening campfire we’ve commented on how glad we are not to be in a motel.  And, we meet the nicest people.  Think what you will about RV’n -- it really is very cool!
