Sadly, Anne's condition deteriorated in Cambria -- high fever, bad cough, and chest pains. Fortunately we were able to see an accommodating doctor -- Dartmouth and Dartmouth Med. School. He knew the town, Strafford, where we met, very well. Diagnosis -- bronchitis. Remedy -- antibiotics and rest. Forced to move on to Plan B. Uh oh -- there is no Plan B!
Improvising on the fly, Anne found buses with bike racks. After two nights in Cambria at the Bluebird, Anne caught a bus to San Luis Obisbo. I biked 50 miles and met her there as she arrived. Had a pleasant evening at the fabulous Thursday night farmer's market -- what a neat city!
In the morning, Anne rode her bike with me to Pismo Beach -- 13 miles. She continued on a couple of buses and is now in Santa Barbara staying at the amazing home of an old high school friend whom she hasn't seen in over 30 years. Lauren and her husband Roger used to live in Santa Barabar and are back renting a place this month. Anne has traveled around 150 miles by bus, with her bike, for the grand total of $9.00!! I, on the other hand, biked 60 miles today to the city of Lompoc, and am staying in a really run down room at a Motel 6. I will bike another 60 miles tomorrow and meet Anne at her friend's place.
Hopefully, the rest will give Annie time to fully recover and she will be ready to ride some again on Sunday. It has been a bit of an adventure riding alone, but a bit of a grind also and no where near as much fun as with my riding partner.
